How I Edited a Walgreens Document and Wrote a Professional Memo

What Was This Project?

I was tasked with choosing a document that could use substantive and copy edits, then suggested improvements to the design, sentence structure, and rhetoric to the owner of the document, all the while keeping user needs in mind. I suggested these edits through a professionally written memo addressed to the document's designer and owner, keeping my suggestions polite and straightforward.

Starting the Process

  • I first chose the document that I was going to edit (Walgreens Onboarding Document)
  • I then decided the level of edits (heavy substantive editing and light copyediting)
  • I then created an editing plan assessing who owned the document, the most glaring issues, my audience, the contexts, and my constraints
  • I made edits on the document using the Microsoft Document markup tools (track changes) and added comments on the document explaining my markups and politely suggesting changes
  • Lastly, I wrote a professional memo to the document's owner explaining my markups and suggesting improvements

What did this Teach Me About Myself as a Technical Editor?

Technical editing does not only require an understanding of grammar rules and design, but a recognition of user needs. It is important that a document responds to the user's needs with ease and simplicity, and ensuring that this is the case is a new skill of mine that I have discovered. I've learned that I am great at not only assessing where a user may have trouble while navigating through a document, but also improving these roadblocks efficiently and effectively.
